TIME TO TRANSITION: My Journey into Recruiting

My journey into recruiting was something I never expected. After graduating from college, I made the exciting and often dreadful transition into the job force. Not only did I not use a recruiter, but I thought poorly of the field. I didn’t believe a random person was going to have success finding something better than I would. Imagining it would cost a small fortune to even have the help, I was bitter about the idea all together. Little did I know what was in store for me.

The irony of choosing this path of helping others transition into careers is that my own experience fresh out of college was quite opposite. My experience would have been so much easier and less stressful had I known the value of a recruiter or transition coach. I don’t know why, but I always assumed that I would have to pay out of my own pocket for a recruiter or assumed they would view me as just a number. That is not the case at Luxus.

The Transition to Recruiting

Not long after graduation, I had the privilege of interviewing with the Luxus brand. The CEO grew up down the street from me, and I was so fortunate he decided to take a gamble on me. Given my prior negative outlook on the field, I obviously had no experience or industry knowledge. After doing some research and speaking with a few people involved in the industry, I realized my perspective may have been skewed.

I have been with Luxus for about eight months now and have spent the last five officially as a Transition Coach. After working at Luxus, I have a completely new perspective on recruiters.

The Luxus Brand

What I found really unique about this company from the second I stepped into the office was the culture. It’s a very tight-knit office. Although the brands within our office are all new, the relationships are authentic and mature. The people that I work with are truly dedicated to successfully assisting others find a role that fits them. It is so motivating to be a part of this team and to see the joy that everybody receives (including myself) when they help someone find a new career that is both fulfilling and beneficial to their goals.

Something else I found unique about our office is how many different professions we cater to. Not because we are each chaotically doing it all, but because we have multiple brands being launched under one roof. Everything from digital to medical, and that platform grows monthly. Each group is spearheaded by someone with tremendous experience and knowledge in that industry. I still have a lot to learn, but I have picked up on some traits that have amplified my learning curve throughout the transition. My peers have given me solid advice, and equipped me enough to be confident in my process. It’s been valuable to keep it simple.

My Recruiting Process

Patience

For me, this is the trait that is most important. I had to acquire more patience and understanding that finding somebody a job is not an overnight process. There are many different factors that come into play before reaching the end goal. It’s a huge transition for people which means it’s going to take time and focused energy.

Motivation

I like to set goals, both short term and long term to help keep me motivated. Luxus supplies so many opportunities to keep the motivation high by posting statistics, consistently praising people’s strengths, creating friendly competitions, and giving us personal incentives.

Time Management

When I first started working at Luxus, we were trained on how to effectively manage our time. It is very easy to let time slip away especially when you have so much to do. I try to plan my days in advance and use time blocks so I know what I need to focus on in the week ahead. We usually have training every few weeks on important topics that are either a review or completely new.

Communication

Having good communication helps to make the overall process smoother. Speaking for myself, it can sometimes feel like there are a lot of hands in the pot. Account managers, recruiters, candidates, human resources, company heads, etc. can all be involved at any point in time. Effectively communicating the next steps and staying organized is something that my coworkers have given me tips on from the beginning. We have a great system that allows us to make tasks and reminders and input information so that everyone in the office can be aware of what is going on. Good communication keeps relationships strong. Communication to a relationship is like oxygen to life. Without it, it dies.

Positive Attitude

Last but not least, things may not always go as planned. It can be frustrating, but it is important to trust the process and keep positive. This is a trait that I admire about Luxus as a whole. Everybody in this office is positive and uplifting, and it is truly a pleasure to work with all of them. The day is what you make it. Choose to make it great.
