What Does a Substation Engineer Responsible For?

  • Design high-voltage substation facilities (69kV to 500kV) including physical and electrical layout
  • Select and specify major equipment: power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, and current/voltage transformers
  • Develop single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, and equipment arrangement drawings
  • Design grounding grid systems per IEEE 80 standards
  • Coordinate protection and control systems, relay panel design, and DC power systems
  • Prepare construction drawings, specifications, and bill of materials
  • Conduct factory acceptance tests (FAT) and field commissioning support
  • Ensure compliance with NERC standards, utility specifications, and IEEE C57/IEEE 693 standards

Substation Engineer Qualifications & Requirements

Technical Skills

  • Experience with substation design at transmission voltages (69kV, 115kV, 138kV, 230kV, 345kV, 500kV)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, and/or substation design software (RISA, PLS-CADD)
  • Knowledge of protection relay systems (SEL, ABB, GE/Multilin) and relay settings
  • Grounding grid design using CYMGRD, ETAP, or similar tools
  • Familiarity with IEC 61850 station bus and process bus protocols
  • 5-12 years of substation design experience
  • PE license required or EIT pursuing licensure

Professional Competencies

  • Precision and attention to detail in design documentation
  • Coordination with civil, structural, protection, and control teams
  • Strong vendor management for equipment procurement
  • Ability to work through the full project lifecycle from conceptual design to commissioning
  • Clear communication with utility clients and construction teams

Education & Certifications

Education:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from ABET-accredited program

Certifications:

PE license strongly preferred; IEEE Power & Energy Society membership a plus

Preferred Qualifications

  • +Experience with GIS (gas-insulated switchgear) and AIS (air-insulated switchgear) designs
  • +Familiarity with mobile substation and temporary power solutions
  • +Knowledge of transformer protection schemes (differential, restricted earth fault)
  • +Experience with utility or EPC firm: Burns & McDonnell, Sargent & Lundy, POWER Engineers, or equivalent
