What Does a Protection & Controls (P&C) Engineer Responsible For?

  • Design transmission and distribution protection schemes (line, transformer, bus, generator, feeder)
  • Calculate and implement relay settings using SEL, GE Multilin, ABB, Beckwith, or Schweitzer relays
  • Perform protection coordination studies and arc flash analysis (ETAP, SKM PowerTools)
  • Develop protective relay panels, DC schematics, and control house designs
  • Configure and test RTUs, IEDs, and substation automation systems
  • Ensure compliance with NERC PRC reliability standards
  • Support field commissioning and relay testing using test equipment (Doble, Megger, Omicron)
  • Review and approve relay settings submitted by contractors or other utilities

Protection & Controls (P&C) Engineer Qualifications & Requirements

Technical Skills

  • Relay settings experience using SEL-411L, SEL-351, GE D60, GE T60, ABB REL670, or equivalent
  • Short circuit and coordination study software (ETAP, SKM, EasyPower)
  • Familiarity with IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging and process bus integration
  • NERC PRC-019, PRC-023, PRC-025, and PRC-027 compliance experience
  • Experience with SCADA integration and RTU/IED communications (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61968)
  • 6-15 years of P&C engineering experience at a utility, EPC, or consultant
  • PE license strongly preferred

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from ABET-accredited program

Certifications:

PE license preferred; NERC System Operator Certification a plus; IEEE Power & Energy Society membership

Preferred Qualifications

  • +Experience with generator protection (G1/G2 schemes, 40, 21, 87G, 27/59, 81)
  • +Knowledge of high-impedance and low-impedance bus differential schemes
  • +Familiarity with synchrophasor technology (PMUs) and wide-area monitoring systems
  • +Experience with utility or consulting firm specializing in P&C: Quanta Engineering, POWER Engineers, Sargent & Lundy
