What Does a Nuclear Plant Engineer Responsible For?

  • Perform design basis engineering evaluations and 10 CFR 50 licensing basis reviews
  • Develop and revise plant design documents, calculations, and technical specifications
  • Support corrective action program (CAP) investigations and root cause analyses
  • Conduct operability determinations and functionality assessments
  • Perform thermal-hydraulic, structural, or electrical calculations for nuclear safety systems
  • Support NRC inspection readiness, license renewals, and technical specification changes
  • Develop surveillance test procedures and maintenance work packages
  • Coordinate with operations, maintenance, and radiation protection teams on plant modifications

Nuclear Plant Engineer Qualifications & Requirements

Technical Skills

  • 10 CFR 50, Appendix B, and nuclear quality assurance (NQA-1) experience
  • Knowledge of NRC licensing basis documents: FSAR, technical specifications, CLB
  • Experience with nuclear electrical, mechanical, I&C, or reactor physics disciplines
  • 10CFR50.59 screening and evaluation experience
  • INPO/WANO standards and nuclear safety culture principles
  • 5-15 years of experience at a U.S. nuclear generating station
  • PE license preferred; nuclear-specific training and qualification documentation

Certifications:

PE license preferred; NRC SRO/RO license for reactor-focused roles; INPO certifications

Preferred Qualifications

  • +Experience with license renewal (LRA) or subsequent license renewal (SLR) projects
  • +Familiarity with small modular reactor (SMR) or advanced reactor concepts (NuScale, TerraPower, X-energy)
  • +Knowledge of nuclear cybersecurity requirements (10 CFR 73.54, NEI 08-09)
  • +Experience with decommissioning projects (PSDAR, license termination plans)
