What Does a Grid Modernization Engineer Responsible For?
- Design and implement Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and smart meter programs
- Develop distribution automation schemes including FDIR, VVO, and capacitor bank control
- Integrate Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) including solar, storage, and EV chargers into the distribution grid
- Implement and configure DERMS platforms and Distributed Energy Resource aggregation systems
- Design microgrid systems: islanding control, local generation dispatch, and grid synchronization
- Analyze grid data to identify performance improvements and reliability enhancements
- Coordinate with IT/OT teams on cybersecurity and NERC CIP compliance for smart grid assets
- Support utility integrated resource planning (IRP) and demand response programs
Grid Modernization Engineer Qualifications & Requirements
Technical Skills
- •Experience with AMI systems, smart meters, and head-end systems (Itron, Landis+Gyr, Aclara)
- •Distribution automation configuration (Intellirupter, reclosers, capacitor banks, SCADA-controlled switches)
- •Knowledge of DERMS platforms and IEEE 2030.5, IEEE 1547, and DER interconnection standards
- •Familiarity with ADMS / OMS / DMS platforms (Oracle Utilities, ABB Ellipse, Schneider ArcFM)
- •Data analytics and grid modeling for performance optimization
- •4-10 years of distribution engineering or grid technology experience
- •PE license preferred
